Really hard to find documentations online but wondering about good olden days

balaPosted for Everyone to comment on, 5 years ago3 min read

Being a developer finding documentation online for all the project is becoming a big challenge. Even if we find a good documentation, it can again be challenging if we are noobs for a new library or framework. Understanding the documentation and implementing solutions can consume hell lot of time. That is what happened to me today. I had holidays for the past 5 days and for the past 2 days, I have been sitting and banging my head with discord js. Learning new technologies and new libraries is fun but it is frustrating if we are stuck somewhere and we don't get enough guides or documentations online to help us out.

Today, I remembered some of the legends from my office. They are very senior to me and elder people in the office. When I was undergoing some training, one important thing that I learned from them is that they don't really depend much on online sources to get reference code. They completely go through the syntax from the official documentation and have the syntax in their finger tips. I understand that it was the case few years back and few decades back. But nobody is learning syntax today. People now are just referring online to understand the methods and functions they have to use for writing their code. If you are lucky enough, you will be able to get a complete program for the logic that you are trying to implement. That is how modern programming is working.

I would say that people who sit and write code from scratch are really legends and in any software company, you will be able to see only a few people like that and you can easily count the number of people with your fingers. The senior programmers did not have any such sophistication during the early days of programming. My DBA lead under whom I used to work is still capable of writing any complex SQL query even today without referring any documents on online codes. You just explain him a requirement and he will be ready with the code. He also never uses intellisense in the IDE. He used to say that it makes people lazy and if we type all the methods and commands manually every time, we will also remember them in our mind.

Today it was really a hard experience for me. I was stuck to my laptop for more than 18 hours today without moving or focusing on anything else. It was a great experience but when I was stuck somewhere and if I don't find any documentations or help online, I will really feed very bad and that's when I wonder how people managed to code those days without even having someone to help them out. With the growth of AI and machine learning I feel that situation will be even more different after few more years. But lets see.
